The Stony Plain Eagles were looking to go up 2-1 in their first round series vs. the Wetaskiwin Longhorns on Wednesday night at the Glenn Hall Arena, however the hockey gods and referees had other ideas as the Eagles were forced to play a man short twice in the final 5:34 of the third period.
The Eagles battled hard and fought off a fierce Wetaskiwin team all night long, with the Longhorns taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Nick Leyer tied the game on the powerplay early in the second period with a rocket to the top shelf over Wetaskiwin netminder Devin Buffalo.
The third period saw the Eagles take a 2-1 lead as Luc Smith converted another powerplay goal off an excellent passing play with Blake Grainger and Burke Gallimore.
Here's where the game got interesting... A successful kill of Bryton Mills' tripping penalty with 5:34 left to play set the stage for an exciting finish as the Longhorns pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, yet the drama was just about to unfold as believe it or not Nick Leyer was assessed a holding call with 1:27 left to play. The Longhorns capitalized with a 6 on 4 advantage to send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, the league's second leading scorer RJ Reed converted a rebound to give the Longhorns a 3-2 victory and a 2-1 series lead with Game 4 back in Wetaskiwin on Friday night.
Eagles goaltender Wyatt Hoflin was stellar between the pipes, stopping 39 of 42 shots he faced including a handful of odd man rushes and breakaways.
The Glenn Hall Arena was packed and got to watch an incredible hockey game, just with the wrong result. We would like to thank everyone for coming to support the team and hope to see you on Saturday night for Game 5!
